From Asia to Africa, from China to Ethiopia, from the vast and fertile land of China to uninhabitable desert or grasslands, Wang Huadong, Senior Drilling Director of Production Operations Department of Poly-GCL Petroleum Group, takes root overseas and has made his contribution to enable the banner of GCL fly in the sky above the project construction site. Over the past five years, he has stood his post in the front line, carrying the responsibility and dedicated his youth and enthusiasm to develop GCL Oil & Gas business.

In October 2014, Wang Huadong, who has extensive project experience, joined the company and took on the field work of drilling and completion in overseas. This year is his fifth year in the company, and he has also been stationed in overseas oil and gas fields for five consecutive years. "Where there are difficulties, where the situations are the most difficult, there is Wang Huadong." This is the unanimous appraisal of Wang Huadong from colleagues at the oilfield. Stationed in the front line overseas for a long time, Wang Huadong has become a "business card" for foreign friends to get to know the Chinese people and the staff from GCL Oil & Gas Company.

He does everything possible to solve problems, and is known as a good-tempered "big brother" who can lead the team to tackle tough issues.

Speaking of Wang Huadong, the first impression of front-line colleagues for him is: modest and polite, and sincere to others, but this good-tempered "big brother" is absolutely serious and highly efficient while at work.

In 2017, the cementing quality and logging interpretation done in the early stage was unsatisfactory for some wells in the target layers of Calub and M-H in Calub&Hilala&Dohar area. This severely impeded the testing and appraisal work planned for later stage. To ensure the smooth promotion of project, Wang Huadong made a quick decision to organize the establishment of a research team and he himself would serve as the team leader. At the same time, Wang Huadong invited well-known domestic experts and professors to the site to solve issues related with cementing and logging. Wang Huadong and his team members spent days and nights to conduct research and improvement on the cementing technology based on the original cementing operation. Finally, A cementing technology and a fixed cement slurry system suitable for the Calub layer and M-Hamanlei layer in this zone have been formed, which has fundamentally improved the cementing quality, thoroughly solved the cementing quality problem, and laid a solid foundation for the development of the block.

Ogaden is his battlefield on the front line once he put on work clothes.

At 5 pm on March 5th, 2017, during the process of running the technical casing in Well Hilala7, there was an extremely complicated situation in which the casing was blocked, the lift was stuck, and the pump was blocked. If not handled properly, this will cause the entire well to be scrapped. In the face of tremendous pressure, Wang Huadong was not panic. He quickly organized frontline personnel to respond, actively discussed countermeasures with on-site supervisors and other technical personnel, and took various measures patiently and cautiously. Wang Huadong lost no time for responding properly. He stayed at the front line of the project without sleep, and finally successfully dealt with this complex issue after 18 hours of hard work and avoided a major accident. Wang Huadong said: Now when I think of it, the moment the pump was turned on, tears filled the eyes of the people present, and the scene where they hugged and shouted "it’s alive" is still fresh in my memory, which is unforgettable for a lifetime.

He saved every penny for the company while in his position.

While leading the front-line team to complete one task after another, Wang Huadong actively carried out deep drilling to speed up and increase efficiency. As the person in charge of drilling and completion onsite, Wang Huadong is well aware of the importance of drilling cycle and cost to the project. Only by taking cost management as a core task can we truly reduce project costs and improve economic benefits.

In 2019, Wang Huadong served as the person in charge of the GCL Group’s A-level technical transformation project-"Research and Application of Deep Drilling for Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement". For Garden-1 well applied with deep drilling method, Wang Huadong and the frontline personnel reduce drilling operation date to 60.75 days, with 41.75 days and 3.78 million US dollars saved. Compared with the actual drilling of Dohar-2 and Dohar-4 wells in the same area, the time and cost of operation are greatly reduced than the design. At the same time, Wang Huadong and drilling technicians worked hard to reduce the drilling costs of shallow development wells in MH reservoirs in the Hilala area, further improved the economic benefits of MH reservoir development in the Hilala area, and made breakthrough for couple of indicators that greatly shortened the drilling cycle and cost.

The Ethiopian oil and gas field is a desert grassland, which is not suitable for inhabitants. Suspected cases such as malaria often occur among employees. Someone asked Wang Huadong why he chose to stay overseas for five years. He said: "I'm here to look for oil and gas. If I leave, no one will stay on their job. Besides, I hate to leave my brothers." For five years, Wang Huadong has devoted himself to drilling and completion in overseas oil and gas fields. Up to now, Wang Huadong and his colleagues at the front line have successfully completed the drilling and completion of 16 wells. With the dedication, he has been committed to the technical management of well drilling for a long time. Persevering in a difficult situation is not only his work attitude, but also his professional conduct for his life.

I have a passion for Ogaden, and Wang Huadong said that this project is a great undertaking, and I feel extremely honored to have such an experience. Imagine the scenes of full-scale construction in the near future, towering derricks under the blue sky, non-stop vehicles on the roads of the oil zone, hearty laughter from busy people, and long pipelines on the ground stretching into the distance. What is flowing is everyone’s sweat and hard work. Whenever I think of this, my heart is full of hope.

He is a lone ranger in the desert. He is a pioneer in the new era. No matter it is rainy, snowy, and windy or frosty, he is always on the road of finding oil and gas. He spent life in Ogaden, dedicated his youth to oil and gas exploration, and always remained at the forefront of geophysical prospecting. He is Zhang Xiaochen, a geophysical engineer in the Exploration and Development Department of Poly-GCL Petroleum Group.

On the morning of July 7th, the author walked into the Beijing office of Poly-GCL Petroleum Group and saw this engineer born after 90s. The first impression for him was young, sunshine and courtesy.

In July 2016, Zhang Xiaochen, who had just graduated from university, joined Poly-GCL Petroleum Group with ideals and ambitions and became a geophysical engineer. Oil is mostly stored in less-traveled places. The more desolate the location, the more likely it is to contain rich oil and gas resources. For this reason, as the pioneer of the entire petroleum industry, geophysical prospectors becomes a group of people whose work is tough and can be easily forgotten. Zhang Xiaochen, who has just graduated from university, has made up his mind to devote himself to such a difficult and unique industry and become a member of this group of forgotten people. Just like his name, this gentle-looking, introverted but courageous young man, his arrival is like sunlight of dawn, injecting youth and vitality into the Exploration and Development Department.

In September 2017, Zhang Xiaochen was arranged by the company to go to Ethiopia to participate in the construction acceptance and kick-off of two 2D seismic acquisition projects. That was his first visit to the Calub camp. The plane took off from Beijing, and finally arrived at this unfamiliar place after 11 hours of flight from Asia to Africa. When he got out of the plane, everything was strange before him. This is a new world for him and a new beginning.

Zhang Xiaochen's main job this time is to coordinate the construction of the camp and supervise the data acquisition process. During this period, he participated in the seismic clearing work. The clearing work was the initial work of seismic acquisition. As a surveyor, Zhang Xiaochen needed to follow the points set on the map in the weeds and walk down the prescribed route step by step. In the boundless sea of sand, Zhang Xiaochen and his companions climbed one steep mountain after another, under the scorching sun, facing the flying dust and sharp gravel all the way forward. After determining the location, the bulldozers cleared a road along the route they walked that could be used for the passage of the seismic source vehicle. Zhang Xiaochen told us that this road can be clearly seen on the plane to the camp, and it will not disappear for decades. Local people can walk along the cleared road and collect water. Therefore, geophysical prospectors can be said to be true pathfinders and explorers. In this way, at a point every 25 meters, Zhang Xiaochen and his colleagues flattened road and collected 5125km seismic data in the Ogaden Basin.

At the end of 2017, Zhang Xiaochen was sent to work in the Ethiopia branch due to work needs. It was the Spring Festival, Zhang Xiaochen resolutely gave up the opportunity to reunite with his family. This is the first time he spent Chinese New Year overseas. He is in a foreign land. Anyone would want to go home at this time of a year. Wife and kids at home are the deepest concerns in the wanderers' hearts. But fortunately, his colleagues in Ethiopia gave him a lot of warmth. On New Year’s Eve, everyone started cleaning up early in the morning, pasting Spring Festival couplets, and sitting together making dumplings and watching the Spring Festival Gala live broadcast through the Internet. Although he was overseas, he spent an exciting Spring Festival. The concern of colleagues gave Zhang Xiaochen unlimited motivation. In order to ensure the progress of the project, Zhang Xiaochen started work on the first morning of the Lunar New Year. During the Spring Festival, he and his colleagues did not rest for a day and always worked on the front line of the project.

In fact, continuous work of this intensity has long been common for Zhang Xiaochen. As the company's core department, the Exploration and Development Department is not only responsible for the company's oil and gas exploration and development research work, but also needs to assist in financing and technical exchanges with outside parties. Overtime has long become the norm. Sometimes, Zhang Xiaochen was busy with various temporary jobs or receptions during the day, and took the work home at night, often working overtime until completion at midnight, but he had no complaints, and seriously faced the difficulties and pressures in every job and did not allow any mistakes. "Work without interruption and steady progress" has long been the work creed in the hearts of Zhang Xiaochen and his colleagues.

Zhang Xiaochen said: Seismic exploration is not necessarily the largest investment in petroleum exploration, nor is it the most arduous, but seismic exploration is the work that best demonstrates the never-ending and unstoppable exploration spirit of the oil industry. We don't care too much about the wind in the sky with yellow sand and the bumpy road. What we care more about is the unseen scenery along the way, the fresh air without the smell of heavy industry, and the sense of accomplishment that comes from being an explorer who has liberated oil and gas staying underground for 150 million years. Looking at the oil fields rising from the ground, geophysical prospectors have a sense of accomplishment in their hearts. This is the meaning of my choice of geophysical prospecting!

In the early days after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the slogan of giving oil to the motherland inspired a generation, and the geophysical prospectors gave their youth and enthusiasm, as well as the hope to the oil industry. Today, the oil and gas people of Poly-GCL Petroleum Group will light up Ogaden with their youth and passion, and write a new chapter for the development of Ethiopia's own oil and gas industry.

In July 2015, Zhen Chunyang, who just graduated from university and walked out of campus, joined Poly-GCL Petroleum Group with the passion to make contribution by finding oil and gas, and became a geological engineer in the company's exploration and development department. He was still a student yesterday, and in just one month, he completed the transformation of his identity from a student to a gas man.

This guy is a bit "stubborn".

On the eve of the 2017 Spring Festival, Zhen Chunyang took the initiative to request a front-line work internship at the Calub camp in Ethiopia. Friends around him did’t understand, and tried to persuade him to work and study in China saying it’s no big difference. However, Zhen Chunyang said, "The knowledge learned in textbooks must be combined with production and operation practice. If one doesn’t understand the frontline, one has no right to speak. I can’t grow quickly, and my first-line experience is far from enough." From China to Ethiopia, this young man travelled more than 20,000 kilometers alone for 11 hours. When he arrived at the terminal airport and left the airport, Zhen Chunyang was at a loss because of the unfamiliar environment, the difference in habits, and his poor English. He missed his relatives and friends in China. But he did not back down. Zhen Chunyang thought this is a challenge to his comprehensive ability. If he can't even pass this level, let alone do a good job in the future. So he worked during the day, learned local customs, etiquette, and culture at night. After work, he regained English learning and tried to improve his language skills. He was always the last one to turn off the light in the dormitory every night, and every morning he woke up with the first ray of sun in the camp. The hard work paid off. In just a few weeks, Zhen Chunyang was able to communicate fluently with Ethiopian employees, and even sometimes made a few jokes. He was already familiar with various front-line tasks, and the young man's face finally had confident smiles.

    This guy is very courageous.

Even if Zhen Chunyang is the youngest in the company, everyone will give a thumbs up when talking about his working capabilities. In 2019, the four exploration blocks of the company are facing tremendous pressure for exploration extension. The company arranged Zhen Chunyang to be responsible for the analysis of exploration potential of 17&20 blocks and the preparation of materials for the extension strategy. The eastern and northeastern parts of Block 17&20 are cut by the national border and are adjacent to the Somalia region. The security issue has always been an important factor that impacted exploration operations in this area. Block 17&20 has the lowest level of exploration among the four exploration blocks. There is a well in the area that has encountered oil and gas displays, but the well data suffered severe missing, and the hydrocarbon formation conditions in this area are not clear, and the exploration potential is not optimistic. At that time, the agreed working obligation in the block was not completed. If the exploration period cannot be successfully extended, the company would possibly have to return 25% of the land and face a huge fine. This is the first time that Zhen Chunyang has been responsible for such an important task. However, the young man who refused to admit defeat quickly turned the pressure into a positive motivation. In order to successfully complete this task, he kept studying, discussing with colleagues, consulting materials over and over again. After many sleepless nights and holidays spent in the office, his hard work paid off. After careful research, Zhen Chunyang found that the company had not invested any physical workload in the past six years. If the company enter into the extended period, there would be new obligatory workload added, which would inevitably become a heavy burden for exploration. As a result, he had a bold idea: under appropriate conditions, block 17&20 should be returned as a whole! This plan was quickly approved by the company's management. With Zhen Chunyang's proposal, the company finally solved this problem and saved millions of dollars in inefficient exploration.

     This guy is a “meddler”.

"The distance to ambition is never far. Even there are mountains and sea in between, it cannot stop me from going." Zhen Chunyang believes that young people should have ideals, dare to take on important tasks, and dare to stand up when the company is in difficulties. So this young man is famous as meddler for loving solving problems.

In June 2019, the company's cost recovery audit work for the past six years was in full swing, and a large amount of technical data, as the company's important assets, were stored in a scattered and unsystematic manner. This was a problem to the company. At that time, this young man stood up and offered to undertake the work of sorting out technical data, which solved the company's urgent need. In just two months, Zhen Chunyang established a relatively complete technical data filing letter management work ledger, sorted out more than 200 technical filing letters, and completed the sorting of existing electronic technical data and the construction of the Ethiopian technical database. A total of about 350,000 files were backed up to ensure the safety of the company’s core data assets and also provided support for the company’s financial audit and cost recovery. After finishing relevant work in China, Zhen Chunyang rushed to the Ethiopia branch non-stop to handle the technical file work. It was on the eve of the Spring Festival, and relatives around him advised him to go after the Spring Festival. Zhen Chunyang refused. He said, "The oil and gas industry involves a large number of professional categories, a large amount of data, and it is difficult to organize. The earlier I go the earlier I can organize the data more completely." On the day of arrival in Ethiopia, Zhen Chunyang started the sorting work. In just a few weeks, Zhen Chunyang sorted all the logging data of 17 wells stored in the apartment in Addis Ababa into boxes, labeled, put them on the shelves and created indexes. With branch colleagues, he transferred nearly 300 boxes of data such as technical data and financial vouchers stored in the apartment to the data cabinets in office, which ensured the safe storage of the company's archives and assets and successfully completed the mission.

Zhen Chunyang, who is in his best age, has the enthusiasm and ambition of young people. In his heart, he always has a belief to contribute everything to his beloved oil and gas industry. In the past five years, he has done every job beautifully, one step at a time, and he has kept learning and improving in the work.

As a young builder of GCL, this young man born in the 90s, with his actions, has carried forward the Ogaden spirit of "seeking truth from facts, daring to innovate, working hard, and taking responsibility". He is making contributions to the realization of GCL's oil and gas dream. He deserves the name of the best "GCL Staff Model ".
